Progress

I coach high school softball and our season just ended on Monday. Catlin is happy about that because that means I actually have time to help him at the farm. The farm is only 1/2 acres. Small by some standards but plenty large enough for us with little experience. We have had a lot of rain in our area recently (I know, it's springtime). But our tomatoes are looking a little yellow at the moment. We collected a soil sample, the field we are working in this year was a corn field last year, and I guess corn sucks up the nitrogen of the soil. So last night Catlin and I spread fertilizer with a push behind spreader. We had to be careful with the plants we already have in the ground because too much nitrogen can burn the plants. We also planted radishes and 60 potatoes yesterday. Catlin bought a potato hiller last week, and thankfully he did because it took no time at all.

We have had a couple days without rain so I'm sure the tomato plants are enjoying it. We have thunderstorms rolling into tonight and is supposed to rain until Sunday so hopefully the tomato plants don't die on us completely. Our pepper plants are doing really well so far. The peas we sowed directly into the ground are about 8 inches tall at this point, and we have a few lettuce sprouts coming up too. The kale that was started in Catlin's greenhouse isn't dead yet, and the deer so far seem to be ignoring it. We saw some corn and bean sprouts yesterday. I'm assuming those will really start popping after this weekends rain. Carrots could be popping as well. It's hard to tell whether or not they're carrots or if it is weeds.

It all seems to be coming together. We still have a long list of vegetables to get in the ground and we might be 'late' but that's all part of the experience. Even though I grew up working on a vegetable farm, I hardly did any of the prep work. We have some volunteer squash, pumpkins, something coming up in one corner. We're going to let them go to see what they are.
